How Long Does Botox Last -Understanding the Duration and Effects
Start by defining Botox. Botox, also known as Onobotulinumtoxin A is a neurotoxin that comes from clostridium botulinum. FDA has approved four types of cosmetic wrinkle treatments. There are four types of wrinkle-reducing products that have FDA approval: Botox®, Xeomin®, Dysport® and Jeuveau.
All of them work by blocking the signal that the nerve sends to the muscle targeted, preventing it from contracting. The contraction of the targeted muscles is prevented, resulting in less pulling or action on the skin. This also reduces the appearance of wrinkles. All of these products produce the same result but they vary slightly with regard to their duration, onset and level of discomfort.
Several factors determine when to use a product. Sometimes it’s the injector or surgeon’s choice. Other times, patients may find that they prefer one product over another after trying different ones. All of these products, in either case are effective and safe when used correctly.
Expectations during the procedure
The real question is: What are the options? Your injector may discuss your goals with you at the time your injection. After an examination, he or she will then be able determine if your goals are achievable with neurotoxin. You’re in luck if it is possible!
The areas to be injected will then be marked, perhaps with an eyeliner/marker that can be removed. To ease any pain, you may be offered a numbing lotion or ice packs. The injections are performed once you’re ready in different areas of your body to reach the targeted muscles.
There may be a few bumps on the skin where the injection was made, but they will disappear by the time that you leave your office. There may be some minor bruising that will disappear in 24 to 48 hours. You will also be instructed on how to proceed in the following 24 hours. The injector can differ.
Start
It is normal to see the full results of neurotoxins after 7-10 days. My personal advice to my patients is that they should wait at least 2 weeks following their Botox treatment. If there are any touch ups needed, I will be happy to do so. This is because the toxin takes a while to stop the nerve impulses from reaching the muscles. This isn’t an immediate reaction.
The Duration of the Event
Wouldn’t it be great if Botox could last forever? Unfortunately, Botox doesn’t last forever. The neurotoxin’s action will eventually wear off, and nerves will be able again to send signals to muscles for them to work or contract. In general, Botox lasts 3-4 months.
It will be true that some patients may experience a longer duration of treatment, ranging from 4-6 months, while others will only see a 2-month period. First-timers may also notice the fact that their symptoms may be shorter initially, but last longer following a second treatment. Each person has their own unique experience, and the results can vary.
